Vinyl Records Top 5 eBay Sales Week Ending 10/25/2008

Top 5 List:

1. 45 - J D Bryant "I Won't Be Coming Back" / "Walk On It" Shrine 108 - $10,230.00 Start: $0.01 Bids: 15

2. LP - Michael Jackson "Thriller" LP White Label Ecuador - $3,000.00 Start: $3,000.00 Bids: BIN

3. LP - Michael Jackson "Thriller" LP White Label Ecuador - $2,500.00 Start: $2,500.00 Bids: BIN

4. LP - Michel Legrand "La Piscine" Soundtrack Japanese Pressing White Label - $2,351.00 Start: $225.00 Bids: 21

5. 10" - Amos Milburn "Rockin The Boogie" Alladin - $1,900.99 Start: $99.99 Bids 18

One of the rarest Northern Soul 45's tops the list this week, J D Bryant's Shrine 45 "I Won't Be Coming Back" appears on the Top 5 for the first time, getting a healthy price at over $10.2k. This sale demonstrates that its not just rarity of the music that gets the big bids but rarity of the item. The songs on this 45 are available on Shrine compilation CD's and reissues, but in its original issue this is a rarest of rare record.

Identical records occupy the next two spots. Ecuadorian pressings on white vinyl of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" LP sell on Buy-It-Now's for $3k and $2.5k respectively. Issued from many 70's & 80's hit albums, these colored pressings from South America (there have been Columbian pressings as well) got on the Top 5 numerous weeks last year, but these are the first ones to show up in many months.

In the #4 spot, a Japanese pressing of a Michel Legrand soundtrack bids past $2.3k. A 10" record takes the #5 spot, an Amos Milburn piano boogie record selling for almost a dollar over $1.9k.

5. 45 - Elvis Presley "Good Rockin Tonight" / "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine" Sun 210 - $2,150.00 Start: $2,150.00 Bids: BIN

Wall Street sucks, The City strains, but we got soul! The highest selling record of the year closes a dollar below $15.1k the week that the worlds economy chokes on its own vomit. As my grandmother used to say, "There'll always be somebody with money."

The top spot this week goes to 100 club member Junior McCants with his legendary "Try Me For Your New Love" King 45. The story, and those outside Northern Soul circles likely don't know it, is that Junior McCants died suddenly of a brian tumor, causing King to pull this record before it was ever released, it some years later becoming a club rarity.

Next, another Northern Soul 45 from The Primers gets a good price at over $5.3k. A jazz LP from Jakie McLean places in the #3 spot closing a dollar over $2.5k.

The Chantels "We Are The Chantels" LP bids up over $2.3k for the number 4 spot. On a Buy-It-Now, an Elvis Sun 45 sells for halfway over $2.1k and gets the number 5 spot.

Vinyl Records Top 5 eBay Sales Week Ending 10/04/2008

Top 5 List:

1. LP - Johnny Burnette "Rock 'N Roll Trio" LP Coral US Pressing - $2,830.00 Start: $9.99 Bids: 26

2. 45 - Devotions "Do Do De Dop" / "Can You Explain It" National - $2,225.00 Start: $999.00 Bids: 7

3. LP - The Beatles self titled 'White Album' UK Parlaphone (for export) - $2,025.00 Start: $999.00 Bids: 8

4. 45 - David Bowie "Changes" / "Andy Warhol" Japanese Picture Sleeve - $1,850.00 Start: $1,850.00 Bids: BIN

5. 45 - Wayne Williams "Red Hot Mama" / "Tell Me What To Do" Sure - $1,580.00 Start: $9.99 Bids: 18

A popular LP collectible tops the list this week, Johnny Burnette's "Rock 'N Roll Trio" in near mint condition sells for over $2.8k. This record is not all that rare, as the graph shows, however manufacturing practices at Coral in the fifties make a near mint version like this one (and others on the top peaks of the graph) a rare and valuable find. By comparison, UK versions in near mint condition tend to sell at about two-thirds their US counterparts, as UK jackets used glossy material and wide tabs to hold the jacket together.

In the #2 spot a Northern Soul 45 from Devotions closes past $2.2k.

The #3 spot goes to a Beatles' White Album, this one a UK pressing on Parlophone. The Parlophones of Apple days are pressings that got exported to Commonwealth countries. This one sells for a little over $2k. Just to note, the rarest of these Parlophone pressings is Yellow Submarine, which typically fetches $10k.

A David Bowie Japanese 45 gets the #4 spot, selling on a Buy-It-Now for over $1.8k and the #5 goes to another Northern Soul 45. This one from Wayne Williams, and it sells for over $1.5k.

2. LP - Sonny Clark "Cool Struttin'" Blue Note Mono - $3,750.00 Start: $5.00 Bids: 12

A Northern Soul 45 breaks past $5k this week, a Lester Tipton record on La Beat hitting past $6.5k. La Beat was a label out of Los Angeles that has a huge following in Northern Soul circles and many dozens of records on the label sell in the $30 - $300 range. At least from a glance, it seems La Beat, more than any other small label, has the largest number of high dollar collectible records.

As far as labels go, Blue Note likely has the highest number of high dollar LP's. And the #2 spot goes to Sonny Clarks' "Cool Struttin" on Blue Note. This record sells for over $3.7k. Next, another Northern Soul 45 from Eric Mercury sells on a Best Offer for $3.1k down from an asking price of $4.5k.

The famous U2 12" known as "Three" gets the #4 spot selling for over $2.6k. And last, a Japanese T-Rex 45 closes for a penny less than $1.8k.
