In The News - Van Halen Postpone 31 Concert Dates

Van Halen have postponed 31 dates on their 2012 North American tour. The postponed shows were to run from July 7 in Uncasville, CT through Sept. 25 in Milwaukee, WI. No official reason has been given for the postponements, and there’s no word yet on when the rescheduled dates will be announced. Essentially, they've postponed two thirds of the tour. There's a rumor that the band is feuding, but it doesn't make sense in light of the fact that they are going ahead with the first half of the tour dates. To be fair, several shows on their 2007-2008 tour were postponed as well, and all were ultimately rescheduled. So, hang on to your tickets people, and keep the faith.

History Picking - The Beach Boys Release Their Album "Pet Sounds" in 1966

The Beach Boys release their classic “Pet Sounds” album on this day in 1966. Though not their biggest selling album, many consider this to be their best. Though session musicians played most of the parts, this is definitely a Beach Boys album. This has some of the group's most stunning melodies and lush harmonies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance. The boys layered sounds of bells, Theremin, orchestral strings, everything but the kitchen sink to create a massively influential work, which immediately vaulted the band into the top level of rock innovators among the intelligentsia, especially in Britain, where it was a much bigger hit.

Nagging Vinyl Record Question - How Do I Tell If It's A Scratch Or Dirt

Many people believe their vinyl records are "scratched" beyond repair when in fact the problem is deeply ground-in material (dust and mold etc) stuck to the inside of the record's grooves. You can tell the difference between scratches and various forms of gunk stuck in the grooves by asking; does the sound happen once a revolution of the turntable, or do I hear pops and crackles for the whole records revolution? If you hear pops and crackles all the way round, it is more than likely deeply ground-in material that is stuck inside the record grooves.

Here's how it happens. Small particles of mold, dust, oils, skin, smoke and other material actually get stuck to microscopic ridges located within the grooves of the record. This is caused by the friction of the stylus passing over the tiny ridges and generating just enough heat to make the tiny ridges sticky. The stylus then picks up loose material as it travels through the grooves and deposits them on the sticky ridges where they are there to stay.

There are many fluids and cleaners on the market, ranging from between a few dollars and several hundred dollars. Using one of those products to clean your vinyl before each play will go a long way towards cutting down on that dust and dirt. Though much to an audiophile's chagrin, it's impossible to get the vinyl completely clean and dust free. That is, unless you can play it in a "clean room"

Vinyl Record Art - Wall Art Made from Old Vinyl Records

The JAXPAC, the Jacksonville Public Art Commission put local artists to work on the streets of Jacksonville. The artists took old vinyl records and combined them with wheat-paste graffiti to create a new kind of urban fossil. While you can’t hear the music from the records, if you listen closely, you may be able to hear the call of creatures long extinct.

History Picking - Top Ten ALL-TIME "Hot 100" Songs

"Billboard Hot 100 50th Anniversary" chart -

 All-time "Hot 100" top songs*

  1. "The Twist"
  2. "Smooth"
  3. "Mack the Knife"
  4. "How Do I Live"
  5. "Macarena" (Bayside Boys Mix)
  6. "Physical"
  7. "You Light Up My Life"
  8. "Hey Jude"
  9. "We Belong Together"
  10. "Un-Break My Heart"

I don't know if I feel worse about the fact that the Macarena is on there.; Oh - please burn the images of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton doing it, out of my mind forever! Or, that The Beatles only appear once, and rank  8th.?! Tragic. If you're curious as to why, or have 5 minutes of mind numbing boredom penciled in for this hour, read the criteria below.

*Criteria used for "Billboard 50th Anniversary" chart position

The songs in the "50th Anniversary" charts had to appear on the Hot 100 in order to be counted. This may create some confusion (for example: many great country artists and songs are not on the "50th Anniversary" chart because, while very popular on the country charts they didn't cross over to the Hot 100). Also, keep in mind the Hot 100 started in August 1958 so any prior songs are not listed, including some popular Elvis Presley songs.
The "50th Anniversary" chart is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100. The artist chart utilizes the same methodology, with weighted points applied to all titles charted by each artist during that 50-year span. They are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at number one earning the greatest value and weeks at number one hundred earning the least.
Hot 100's 50th Anniversary award relative points for every week that a title spent on the chart, regardless of rank. For the Hot 100's 50th Anniversary, Billboard's charts department ensured a more balanced representation of hits from all 50 years, by analyzing the length of chart runs in earlier decades, as well as the average weeks that titles spent in the top 10 and at number one. Weights for earlier spans were then formulated, to compensate for the shorter chart runs that titles experienced before the 1991 conversion to precise and objective sales and radio data from Nielsen Music.
Prior to December 1998, songs did not appear on the Billboard Hot 100 until a retail single became available (which, incidentally, is why hits like Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and No Doubt's "Don't Speak" never appeared on the Hot 100). In earlier years, retail singles came to market fairly early in a song's life-usually shortly after, or even before, a song came to radio.
However, during the 1990s, when labels would strategize number-one chart bows by significant hits, the retail release of some priority singles were withheld until radio audience reached maximum levels. Although some of these songs spent significant numbers of weeks at number one or in the top ten, the delay of the sales component ultimately shortened the spans these songs would spend on the chart. With the new methodology rewarding points for a song's entire chart run, rather than confining points to weeks spent in the top ten, the shorter chart lives recorded by the songs that debuted at number one impact their all-time standings.

Jimmy Fallon To Release New Album -Will Featue Legendary Performers

What do you call an album which features such legends and great performers as Sir Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder and Dave Matthews? "Blow Your Pants Off" of course! What else would you call it? The mastermind behind this album is none other than Jimmy Fallon, who also lined up Stephen Colbert and Brian Williams. We'd expect a no less absurd and eclectic group to collaborate when Fallon is involved. Even Tebow gets in the mix! Well, as the subject of a mash-up at least. The new album will hit the stores and download sites on June 12. What I REALLY  wanna know is... is that really Jimmy's butt?

Tom Gabel, Lead Screamer Of Florida Power Trio Against Me!, Comes Out As Transgender

Tom Gabel, the lead screamer of Florida power trio Against Me!, has come out as transgender and plans to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Gabel isn't the first musician to undergo sexual-reassignment surgery; in 1972, Walter Carlos became Wendy Carlos. But she announced the news quietly seven years later in a Playboy interview. Throbbing Gristle's Genesis P-Orridge also underwent a series of surgeries to become gender-neutral. But for a major rock star to announce the news is unprecedented!

Gabel, has dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years, and will soon begin the process of transition, by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments. Gabel plans to take the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to his wife, with whom he has a daughter. The singer is making a point of being open about his decision, and in an interview with Rolling Stone said "I'm going to have embarrassing moments, and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."

History Picking - May 5, 1956 Elvis Presley Scores #1 Hit Single And Album

'Heartbreak Hotel' became his first million-seller, and was the best-selling single of 1956. The lyrics were based on a newspaper article about the suicide of a lonely man who jumped from a hotel window.

Check Out - "Northern Soul" The Film

This is a story of a youth culture that changed a generation and influenced songwriters, producers, DJs and designers for decades to come.

This is the story of Northern Soul.
Award-winning director Elaine Constantine will begin shooting her first feature-length film Northern Soul in Summer 2012 under Stubborn Heart Productions and in association with Baby Cow Films.

The film will tell the tale of two Northern boys whose worlds are changed forever when they discover black American soul music.

Northern Soul was phenomenally popular with British youths in the 1970s, taking the North of the country by storm. Northern Soul the film intends to appeal to those generations of fans while attracting a modern audience who can relate to youth culture from another era. If you were there, you’ll know. If you weren’t there, you’ll wish you had been.

Gone But Not Forgotten - Beastie Boys Adam Yauch (MCA) Dies Of Cancer At 47

Punk Hip Hop legend Adam Yauch has died of cancer. He was only 47 years old. I could go on and on about how he co-founded probably the most well known of Post Punk bands. I could wax eternal over his musical accomplishments; the Beastie Boys were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last month. Or, I could praise him for putting his money where his mouth was; he became heavenly involved in the movement to free Tibet. But I won't. In fact, to be as honest as I can be I wasn't a huge fan of The Beastie Boys. Sure, I dug their music, and got what they were about. I knew they were pioneers in their time; mixing Punk and Hip Hop. Genius, in my opinion.  Respect to them.

What I WILL say is that 47 is too fucking YOUNG to die of cancer! Cancer is supposed to afflict the elderly. In a fair Universe, we would all hum merrily along then pop off peacefully in our sleep at 90+ years old. The subject of cancer has hit me closely of late, so I am especially sensitive. I'm as sure that I'm not unique in this experience; I marvel daily that I got to my advanced age of 44 without having it hit all that close to home.

Regardless of my ranting and protests, the Universe took Adam Yauch. Wherever he is or isn't now, I feel like the world is a little colder for his not being alive in it. - RIP

Beatles Artifacts On Sale On The Road To Liverpool - And Another John Lennon To-Do List Sells At Auction - This Time For $8000.00

Back on December 6 we reported that a John Lennon to-do list . . . yes . . . a scribbled list of things that Mr. Lennon wanted to get done one day, like get the cable fixed and "pick up herb from Steve", sold at auction for $6000.00.  Well, as bold as can be, Gottahaverockandroll.com put up another to-do list of John Lennon's and late in March another to-do list sold for $8000.00.

This one is a two-sider, and has some very interesting notations.  Lennon didn't have to wait around for the cable guy on this particular day, so it seems he had more time for grocery shopping and the dentist.  Herb is mentioned again, possibly basil, but perhaps that euphemism.  He was looking for a narrower neck on his guitar, and somehow wanted to check his "hair dryer for cancer".  There was also a broken mirror in the bedroom which needed taping.  But the most mysterious notation on this to-do list begs the question . . . who the hell was Fred?

You can find this, and many other interesting items of Beatle stuff that sold (and didn't sell) by going to www.gottahaverockandroll.com and looking at the March 21-30 auction results.

And keep an eye here for specifics on other auctions or sales we find on that site.  Those guys would sell someone's booger.
