"Step one Don't freak out!" I read this and instantly felt at ease. I knew this book would not take itself so seriously that I would end up bored to tears...literally! With advise about clothing and accessories from outer wear to under wear, celebrities weigh in on what they use to look good. This book is a gem that helped me build a solid basic wardrobe that is in style, flattering and feels good on me too.

Book Review - Winter Style: A curvy woman's guide to wearing hot plus size clothing in the cold, by Plus-Size-Magazine.com (From the Experts of Plus-Size-Magazine.com) by Thibault Masson

I can't believe I've gone my whole life not knowing how to dress during the winter, or what my body shape is. I didn't know that I had anopther option other than to take armfuls of clothing into the dressing room with me. Emerging an hour later, a sweaty mess, with one piece that looked good on me. Or to throw on bulky layers of whatever I could find to stay warm...again ending up a sweaty mess! This book taught me exactly how to dress my body shape in a flattering way. From coats to underthings. From everyday dressing to special occasions, I can feel confident in the fact that I KNOW how to find what looks just right on me. Even how to find HOT clothes! The book also has you covered in the shoe and accessories department. A nice little surprise at the end of the book was information on knitting your own winter wear. I feel inspired!

Lost TV - The Visitors "Part One - Earth In The Year 2484" 1970s Czech Science Fiction

And when I was a kid I was taught all those commies huddled in front of 1940s style radios, under one blanket, eating stale bread. Hell, the sets here are better than Space 1999.

Book Review - Sweet Surrender by Evita Patton

A story of a plus size woman who has to learn that others truly see her

As a romance Sweet Surrender works on all cylinders. Maybe it's a little too dreamy, girl finds music star and he doesn't turn out to be an egomaniac (maybe), but that's what romances are, and I learned the secret twenty five years ago that to connect with women, read what they read. Men read stuff we're smarter than. And as someone who has been in love with a plus size woman for most of those twenty five years, I connected with Bella's character.

Book Review - Lilith Rising 1969 by Roberta Kagan

Adventure and exploitation mixed to a romantic end

This is the second of Roberta Kagan's books I've read, and this novel shows a writer growing in her development of narrative and characters. Lilith Rising falls somewhere between romantic adventure and sixties exploitation film in a charming way. I will head off coming criticism by pointing out the following: Just as the real South in no way looks like southern California, via Django Unchained, the positional anachronism of Route 66 leading to San Francisco through Nevada works just fine in Lilith Rising - you don't gotta be a star filmmaker to get away with the device. And I'm saying this as someone who drove the dirt road from Glennrio to San Jon in the rain, so my Route 66 credentials are intact.

Book Review - Puppy Development Guide: Puppy 101 for Dog Lovers by Tim Carter

A book that speaks dog talk

I found this a very helpful book. The relationship building aspect vs "training" made for an insightful education on how to view the world from you puppies point of view. There were many helpful links in the book too, so it puts the Kindle to good use. The discussion on how to choose a puppy and where to find a well bred healthy puppy was also good.

Book Review - Minority Bolshevism Zuriel Redwood

This book lines up all the major grains of sand in our shoes up against the wall. Many times while reading this book, the hair stood up on the back of my neck because I felt a little like a cornered animal with no way out. Painting a very dark picture of the U.S., The author warns us that the free world is far from free.  This book exposes the diabolical patterns of control and influence present in this world with masterful skill, and you would do well to read, and heed it's warnings.

Book Review - Master Your World: 10 Dog-Inspired Leadership Lessons by Mary Kelly Phd

A book surprisingly more effective than it's cute analogy

Using the dog analogy throughout the book, writer Mary Kelly creates and executes scenarios of people management, both as a boss and an employee, that demonstrate how an effective and fulfilled social unit performs. I found myself in agreement when she pointed out how to do things from an employee perspective. Anyone who spends time around dogs understands the alpha position isn't exactly the most desirable one. The alpha dog often seems to wonder how he got the job. That aligned me with Mary Kelly as leadership is often about following subordinates, and letting them tell you when to duck. Get this book. It has very insightful, if playful lessons.

Book Review - Legends Lost: Tesnayr by Nova Rose

Fantasy story with well planned battle scenes

I enjoyed this detailed fantasy story with very smoothly written battles scenes. The story focuses on Tesnayr a warrior from a far away land, however many other strong characters populate this story. I particularly liked Nelyn, the daughter of the warrior Jarown, who is a strong warrior in her own though her father tries to protect her. Battle scenes make or break a book like this, and I read it without having to piece together on my own what was going on. First rate.

Book Review - The Enchanted River Race by Caldric Blackwell

A very tight and fun book about friendship and perseverance

Through riddles, volcanoes and waterfalls, Amy and her friends must persevere to win the race. This book contains its theme of friendship, teamwork and perseverance with excellence. It's a medium length children's book, and with Amy being 11 years old seems appropriate for readers eight and up, or younger if they are advanced readers. The illustrations are fairly simple, so it's a children's book whose story is in the words.

Lost TV - Lookwell! - The best television series never made

I have a feeling this show wouldn't have gone anywhere anyway. Some ideas go only so deep before you hit solid rock. Truth is that this pilot was likely made just for the amusement of people who worked around television at the time.

Book Review - Fire Of The Raging Dragon by Don Brown

An engaging political thriller about USA vs China

The best political thrillers can eject the most twisted political ideas, and show a writer's penchant for paranoia, and the reader still loves the book. That reader probably would prefer said writer won't ever be his neighbor, lest reader be confronted by writer about mind controlling radio signals emanating from reader's lawn mower.

Those are my feeling after reading this book, the first I've read of Don Browns (and there's a long list of them). Just like with me and Clancy I sometimes wanted to deck the guy on principle. No President is that ignorant, more likely he just doesn't give a crap. And no culture is so monstrous as to . . . well I'm not going to give the plot away.

The upside here is that I kept reading, so it's fiction that works on all cylinders. Hell, maybe Don Brown had an Obama lawn sign up and this is just his act. Don't know, don't care. The point is on two levels, first the gritty political conspiracy and monstrosity, and second the sub plot involving the President's daughter on the captured ship, the book works as fiction worthy of the top shelf at the grocery store check-out line.

Book Review - Blind Love by Jasmine Bowen

An adorable romance

This is humorous and adorable romance about a blind actor who had kept his blindness hidden throughout his career, and a woman Emily, who the actor, Caius, has known most his life. Caius has looks and fame, but will he be able to get Emily, the woman he loves, who because she feels the world of Hollywood is silly, and that she's know Caius since they were kids (warts and all) keeps her affections at a careful distance.  In the end, some of his secrets are revealed, and I'm saying if he gets the girl.

Book Review - Finding Esta by Shah Wharton

Supernatural story with original character and twist

This novel combines one the most complicated characters combined with a refreshing twist on aliens and supernatural to come into my eyes in quite awhile.  While I'm not a reader who minds coming across a book that reads like a good television show (predictable but engaging) my barrier for that standard is the ubiquitous Kindle buck.  $2.99 is a fair price for originality.  Spend it here.

Esta begins as an intensely screwed up character who can relate to know one on an intimate level and is addicted to pleasing her critical and passive aggressive family. Chapter four is a great intense interior monologue of transformation experience by her through contact with her "otherworldly" friend. I think what makes this work is that many characters get to their ability to communicate with the supernatural through being "oversensitive".  Author Shah Wharton flips that and Esta gets there primarily by being cut off from the real world, giving the book a extra dimension of fright because it's all so schizophrenic.

Book Review - Little Lotus Flower by Roy Bar Ilan

Beautiful sweet little book

This lovely little book will delight your children and yourself! A little lotus flower learns an important life lesson and grows into a glorious lotus blossom. My 4 year old twins ask me for this book every night at bedtime and they like taking turns holding the kindle and turning the pages. It's a great book full of simple truths.

Book Review - Making Life Better by James Vandenburg

A book the focuses on the practicalities of simplifying our thoughts

James Vandenburg stresses simplicity. The book begins with areas of thought in which most of us could benefit from a more uncomplicated approach to demonstrations of how humans overcomplicated matters and how we can unwind our thought patterns and behaviors. Then he goes into needs of forgiveness and compassion, to both give and receive. Vandenburg's background is in music, and the book connects itself together in a very musical way by building on motifs. Sometimes that makes it seem a little trivial, but then life's problems can seem trivial when one simplifies them, so if one is open there is a lesson there.

Book Review - The Mystery Of Personal Instant Transformation by Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler

Another great book that demystifies and applies positive thinking techniques.  This is the second book I've read by Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler and I have to again point out how happy I am to find someone sewing together the spiritual and the scientific like she does. The basis of the book takes many forms of amazing human ability that most of us are familiar with, fire-walking, Buddhist meditation, succeeding to some high goal with few or limited resources, and demonstrates the science of the brain in relation to these achievements. Which on a practical level for the reader helps eliminate doubt. It's one thing to hear about people fire-walking and how amazing that is, and another to have an explanation as to how your brain can give your body the same ability. Much of her book covers the mechanism and impact of negative thoughts, and how important doing things, like day-dreaming, mechanically as an elixir to those processes. I found this book a great refresher course on things I need to remember to forget.

Book Review - The Last Days Of Thunder Child by C A Powell

A book that deservedly goes inside War Of The Worlds

Novels like this are like a painting inside of a painting, or a painting inside someone else's painting. C A Powell does a great job in both stepping into Wells' world and handling the sea battle, which is probably the most challenging kind of battle to write. For more detail watch the video I made. For a buck this book is definitely worth it. I got at least seven out of it.

They're All Still Breathing #3: The Moody Blues (60s 70s Rock Bands Where All Members Are Alive Who Played On The First Album)

The antithesis of Black Sabbath, The Moody Blues represented everything else Rock n Roll was about - interest in spirituality and science, concern for the world around us, poetry, bad poetry, really bad poetry, and occasionally worse hair. I first got to see The Moody Blues when I was a teenager, back in the 80s.  It was the first concert I went to with old people, my best friends Mom and Aunt.  It was the first time I smoked pot with adults - my best friends Mom and Aunt.

When Graeme Edge stopped to recite a poem, you could have heard a pin drop, could have except my best friend and I were on the concrete laughing our asses off - something about the audience and verses about butterfly sneezes spoken in an English accent just had that effect. Don't get me wrong, we both loved the Moody Blues - still do.  They are my chief musical guilty pleasure. Graeme Edge possess genius - I proudly own European pressings of his solo LPs.  But we just couldn't stop laughing at that audience of old stoned people on a warm California night listening silently to a recitation of the effects of butterfly sneezes.  Could we have had a punk rock moment at a Moody Blues concert? The possibilities of the genius of this band are profound.

And all the members who played their first album, Days Of Future Past (we can leave out the Denny Laine discussion) are all still with us - Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Mike Pinder, Graeme Edge and Ray Thomas.

They have been probably the cleanest living rock band - known experiments in mid-sixties aside. Hayward and Lodge are still married to their first wives. Graeme Edge loves Star Trek, golf and charity work. I don't believe there has ever been a bad word written about their personal lives. No arrests at customs check points.

About the worse hair, here's the Moody Blues from 1970, featuring Justin Hayward - and a helmet:

Book Review - Rona Is Moving To A New City by Inbar Shahar

A helpful and simple introduction to a relaxing meditative technique

This is a great children's book for two reasons. It does help cope with the effects of family moving on a child, but more importantly in Rona's cat, Fluffy, Rona learns a very important meditation technique to relax and relieve her anxiety. It is the basics to many meditations and this is an uncomplicated introduction to it.
