Book Review - Grand Illusion Of Tomorrow by Julie S Ross

A cross continent romance of coincidences

Sunita lives in Spain but gets to travel to the USA for work. While in Spain she meets an American who is studying there and they fall in love. By fate they meet again later.

This was an engaging character driven romance, which appears based on a true story, and is a very enjoyable read for anyone who likes coming of age romance novels.

Book Review - The Cupola Collusion by Gregory Gunter

Excellent Political Thriller Out Of Today's Headlines

A political thriller has to have good guys and bad guys. They don't however have to be all good and all bad. In Cupola Collusion we get a taste of a good guy who is a little grey, and a bad guy that fits the mold of sadistic evil, at least when he's paid he enjoys the work.

Rich Weller, good guy in this case, grew up with a father who worked for the FBI but around Rich's 13th birthday something happened and life changed. The family went from middle class to pretty damn poor. Rich's father grew to hate the FBI. So when Rich goes to work for the FBI he takes a little bit of attitude with him.

Cobray is a government black-ops soldier who's made a career of killing people in the third world for a decade, and now is making big money killing for a the Creel's, owners of the corporation behind the conspiracy in the book.

The conflict centers around Cari, daughter of a Tea-Party type group leader, who has a document everyone wants. Cari seems the least realized of the characters, but the plot twist surrounding her own father's decision to murder her was the most exciting part of the book.

Cobray was the most interesting character. Though he of course would probably find a way to kill for fun if he had to, that his mind often wanders to the pleasure he finds in his work made me focus on his part more than the others.

Comparisons to The Firm, Three Days of the Condor aside, this was one of the more captivating Kindle books I've read. It stands on its own as a ride right out of today's headlines.

Book Review - Wish Upon A Star by Sabrina Sumsion

A novel that took me back to a sweeter time

I found this an adorable romance that took me back to a time when I had much less to worry about but what I worried about seemed so much more important than any problem I have today. Jen is a lovable character, probably typical, but still fully realized. She is encouraged by her friends but doubts herself. I won't give it away, but it is a very romantic ending. A very fun short novel that made me very nostalgic.

Vinyl Record Art - Dali Clock

Sometimes it seems that anywhere you are you could swing a dead 70's arena band drummer and hit somebody who makes clocks out of vinyl records. And that's probably true. But once in awhile one of those clocks stands out. This clock melting off the mantlepiece is really cool, best use of what's become a trite idea. I just hope to god that it isn't a Bay City Rollers record.

No Teeth - Next Friday Is Omega Auctions Beatles' Collection Sale

Omega Auctions, the house that sold John Lennon's tooth has made public their catalog for this year's Beatles Auction. As reported in the news earlier this year, the auction will feature a set of never before seen photographs from The Beatles 1964 US tour.

But that's about it. Even though the auction was open until early February no one came forth with anything like the objects seen in previous years. No body parts. No notes for drummer gigs found folded inside a book at a boot sale.

In fact, this year's Beatles auction at Omega looks like nothing more than a good week on eBay. It's mostly LP's, a ticket stub or two. Probably the most interesting item is the self portrait by Stu Sutcliffe shown above.

The photo collection tops the estimate list, expected to bring in up to $40k, which is about what John Lennon's tooth sold for.

Book Review - Jack Canon's American Destiny by Greg Sandora

A man like Jack would be good for America

For anyone who ever wanted to read what it about what happens behind the scenes of a political campaign., this is a no-brainer. The character of Jack Canon is dynamic and complex as is the people surrounding him. Sandy his "right hand" is an invaluable member of his team and the sexual tension between them is electric in it's subtlety at times. There is real and real dirty politics between these pages but Canon is a believable and inspirational character who is definitely flawed but honorable. The book takes the reader on a journey through a Presidential campaign and it's a roller coaster ride at times. A very good read, well worth my time!

Book Review - Trump The Economy by E J Kelly

An effective and humorous look at making things work during tough times

Not that the book isn't full of good advice on a number of levels, but I think maybe the best advice the book has tells the story of the authors first employment experience. Essentially it suggests the following - if you want to be successful in business, spend some time working a carnival. Having gotten my own start in a similar way I'd say experience in a situation where essentially you've a lot of lights in the customer's eyes, there are a lot games going on around him or her, and their state of mind has been primed to release a little money, makes for the best environment to learn to sell to many different types of personalities. Now that was the launching pad for the author, and it seems the second best advice he has is keep a sense of humor. Beyond that there is much in the way of practical advice about making choices, finding people, and managing a business. But what's going to come through to contribute to your own success is the author's own humorous and infectious perspective.

Book Review of Veggie Quest by Shmulik Froimovich

A great use of Kindle's ability to be non-linear

Too seldom does the abilities of the Kindle get put into action in this way. This non-linear book will keep a kid re-reading the story and reinforcing the them, which all about eating vegetables. Many vegetable hating kids will see through the ploy, which is why the distraction of getting to choose among the vegetable based "super powers" works so well. I found my son spent time with it until he got through every option. I don't think he wanted us to know, but he did quietly make sure he ate his vegetables that night.

Book Review - Super Agents by A. D. Thompson

Great new team of heroes and a good villain too

It's everyday you see new teams of super-heroes on comic book shelves, so it's refreshing to see it told in novel form, and it got my attention, especially the mix of angels, aliens and humans on Earth. The author apparently pulled the characters from friends and animals in his own life, which as they say, write what you know. It makes for an intimate and thoroughly enjoyable action story about an awkward young team of aliens with super powers, a disreputable government agent, and a mysterious angel, all fighting against a powerful crazed alien. Pretty good stuff.

Book Review - The Night Horses by Anaka Jones

A cute picture book that you'll keep being asked to read

This book has developed quite a following on it's Facebook page. I found it after reading it as Philly Book Pick. The book kept my daughter up looking at the pictures and playing along. It's a simple story that kids think is so funny and they want it read again and again, and improvise playing along with the horses.

What I found most interesting is that the book was written by a 12 year old girl who lives on a farm in Michigan. Until I found that out after I read the book I was curious as to the very playful nature. It's hard for the best children's writers to create something that connects with kids, but for a talented young person, or at least for Anaka Jones, she is able to get young kids playing like horses, or kids playing like horses playing like people.  Well . . . just get the book, you'll see.

2 Book Reviews - How I Wrote 2 eBooks in 21 Days, and The Bread Is In The Bed by Glen Stanford

These two books work in tandem, so I'm posting both reviews together.

A funny book about writing a funny book

What is it about writing that causes anyone who attempts it to discover the magic elixir that is pizza, beer and coffee? It seems everyone who writes discovers either the aforementioned, or if the writer aspires to more literary heights it's gin until he's walking around with a wet stain on the front of his pants.

Anyway, I digress, Glen Stanford takes a meme here and shakes out two worthwhile books with it. And why not. I disagree with the suggestion he makes via another writer that it doesn't matter if the book sucks (which this neither of his sucks) as long as it's cheap and a few people like it. I've read enough bad .99 cent books that I could have bought a first edition Kerouac. I can smell them now.

So go ahead and spend .99 cents (twice). It's a little bit like riding the Merry-Go-Round twice but you get a different horse.

A funny book about making profit by providing service

If you like M&Ms with business strategy than this is the book for you. Written side by side with his other, and I thought funnier book, "How I Wrote 2 eBooks In 21 Days", this book is a humorous exploration of how to run an Inn, run it well, make money, and not kill anyone. It's best advice is in customer service tips that can be applied to every business situation. After all, there really isn't a leisure service more intimate than a place that feeds you, sets you up overnight, and let's you take a bath. Well . . . there is one.

Book Review - A Lion's Pride by Alyssa Rae

Black And White With A Little Bit Of Grease

Alyssa Rae writes in a clear narrative that while uncomplicated serves her story well, and while it can be said that the story of A Lion's Pride is a black and white tale of good and evil, every aspect of her writing serves that end. In other words, it works, and it's just a matter of taste if a reader doesn't like it. I happened to be a reader that enjoys a story where good is good and evil is evil. Not that this story is without complications or characters that are multi-dimensional.

The story is about two biker clubs, one the Fu-Lions, the good guys, and the other the Reaper's Sons, the bad guys who deal drugs and take over towns. The story centers around Alex who is the daughter of the deceased leader of the Fu-Lions club, and the Reaper's want to kidnap her. That's the basics. Characters like Jason, who while a good guy isn't above smacking around someone who desperately needs it, lends the story depth and credibility.

So it's a novel where suspension of disbelief comes easily in a black and white world, and that's a trick not so easy to pull off.

Book Review - Make Money in Up & Down Markets With Eagle Strategies by Ken Kapur

A book that outlines low risk strategies

While a lot of trading books urge you trade he market for big returns, few address details of strategies that can return both large and small returns, with the emphasis being on a system that attempts to reduce risk and insure profit of one kind of another every time. It may be a little as a few percent, but the idea here is avoid loss a high percentage of time. That's contrary and refreshing to some trading books where I've been flippantly told that all I need to do is guess right 51% of the time. No thanks, my time is more valuable than that. Though I'm familiar with the basics here, it will take a little study to understand, so it seems to me that it's more for the intermediate trader, but the book definitely seems worth the effort, and it's full of honest

evaluation and careful analysis.

Book Review - Clash By Night by Doreen Owens Malek

Very enjoyable romantic war novel

I really enjoyed this vivid novel about life during World War II. Much is made about the battles, but not all the much exists about life in the occupied sections during the war. It is a romance and so the characters are a little larger than life. I loved Harris, the American. This was a very enjoyable romantic war story and I highly recommend it. Get it if you love war stories and love stories.
