History Picking - The Beach Boys Release Their Album "Pet Sounds" in 1966

The Beach Boys release their classic “Pet Sounds” album on this day in 1966. Though not their biggest selling album, many consider this to be their best. Though session musicians played most of the parts, this is definitely a Beach Boys album. This has some of the group's most stunning melodies and lush harmonies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance. The boys layered sounds of bells, Theremin, orchestral strings, everything but the kitchen sink to create a massively influential work, which immediately vaulted the band into the top level of rock innovators among the intelligentsia, especially in Britain, where it was a much bigger hit.
