Rolling Stones To Kick Out The Monkey Man

The Bank Of England is considering giving the 10 pound note a rock n roll makeover.  Currently the mug of Charles Darwin sits on that back side of that bill, but The Rolling Stones are under consideration along with The Beatles and David Beckham for portrayal on the Queen's currency.

At left is one mock conception of what that bill may look like, though it's doubtful the BoE would decide on the haggard slightly stoned Jagger portrayed here, and the current walking corpse variety of the last decade or two is probably out too.  I would predict that if The Stones make it onto the currency it will be in Ed Sullivan style form.

Asking For Jim Morrison's Bail Money

Morrison's Bail Bond 1970
Gotta Have Rock And Roll, one of the auction houses that will deal in some of the stranger memorabilia (though they haven't gotten into bodies parts yet), is offering this interesting piece of ephemera.

To the left is Jim Morrison's bail bond, from the concert incident in Miami, where by various accounts, the lead singer of the Doors either exposed his penis or simply unzipped his jeans and stuck the microphone through.  Either way, he was arrested for indecent exposure.

Interestingly, Gotta Have Rock And Roll's opening bid is the exact amount of Morrison's bail - $40,000.  However in today's dollars the bail amount would have been $250k.

History Picking - Runaways From 1964 Go From Ohio To London And From The Beatles To The Rolling Stones

Article From The Milwaukee Journal, Oct 8, 1964.  Two runaways found in London had come to find The Beatles and fell in love with The Rolling Stones.

Ringo Starr Drum Case Discovered - Later Artifact - Not Body Part - Contents Unknown

Ringo Starr's Drum Case - Dig Gallery
The usual word was used here to explain the appearance of the latest Beatle artifact to turn up in the marketplace - "discovery".  This drum case was "discovered" and now sits in a Sheffield UK gallery waiting for a buyer.  Yes, it took an archaeological team six months of digging in the outskirts of Wembly to uncover this drum case.

Expert analysis determined that the case was used to carry the exceptionally rare tom tom drum from London to New York for a tribal event thought to have been called "The Concert For Bangladesh" (it had a shipper date stamp of 8-5-71).

The drum case is being offered by Dig Gallery.  The price is not disclosed, and as with all Dig memorabilia it is available for viewing by appointment only.

Elvis Presley's Mouth Mold Sells For $10,000 and Julian Lennon's baby tooth appears out of nowhere

The King's mouth mold with a crown
Dr. Michael Zuk, a dentist in Alberta, Canada is the proud owner of the Elvis Presley mouth mold (with used crown) that sold at auction late last month.  The doctor's winning bid was $10,000.

Dr. Zuk is also the winner of John Lennon's rotten tooth, for which he bid over $30,000 last November.  He may also be the progenitor of  the term Canadian Dentist as an epithet for someone more than a little eccentric with their money.

The tooth collection has created a stir around his practice with patients and the curious calling to see the teeth.  And after seeing both Elvis' mouth and Lennon's rotten tooth, those patients, and maybe some the curious, might stick around for extra cleaning, or get their kids in early for braces.

The good doctor also has a baby tooth in his possession from Julian Lennon.  This has been reported in other news sources as having come with John Lennon's tooth for purposes of DNA testing, but no mention of Julian's baby tooth was made prior to some public contemplation by journalists, bloggers and forum posters that the tooth could be a fake.  After all, it's provenance begins with John Lennon's maid and then goes to the maid's daughter, with the unusual claim that John Lennon gave his maid the tooth, and in some reports, gave it to her after he pulled it out himself.  Dr. Zuk said publicly last month that he was looking for a relative of John Lennon's to provide a DNA sample for comparison.

Ringo Starr's Madryn Street Birth Home Rejected For Preservation - Lennon And McCartney Homes Granted Protected Status

The battle for 9 Madryn Street had been quiet since late last summer, when a protective order was granted in order to give English Heritage, the public body in the UK that oversees historic homes, the opportunity to consider granting Ringo Starr's birth home (which had been bombed by Nazi's while Ringo's Mom was pregnant), protected status.

It had come down to a battle between the Labor dominated Liverpool City Council, and London's coalition Lib-Con goverment, with the central administration halting city demolition plans.

English Heritage weighed in with their decision today, and while giving protected status to John Lennon and Paul McCartney's birth homes, rejected the application for Ringo's home. Though it could be taken as a slight to Ringo over . . . some unkind comments he made about Liverpool last year . . . or his weird behavior about autographs . . . or, that he's Ringo . . . it should be noted that his family lived in the home only until Ringo was four year-old, and the later home where Ringo spent most of his childhood already has protected status.

No comment yet from anyone on how the drama will move forward, but hey, puts one more story back in our pocket on VRT that few other news outlets, music or otherwise, are following.

The Top 10 Creepiest Rock n Roll Artifacts Ever Bought And Sold - On Next Tuesday's Vinyl Record Talk 8pm ET / 5pm PT Live On Radio Dentata

Next Tuesdays Vinyl Record Talk will be all about the strangest objects ever traded for money that came out of Rock n Roll. Currently, a mold of Elvis Presley's teeth along with an unused crown is headed for the auction block in the United Kingdom.

We reported extensively on John Lennon's tooth which sold in November, and has come back in the news lately, as the dentist who purchased the tooth is offering photographic prints of the molar, and after some criticism of the original auction house's authentication process, is offering to have the tooth DNA tested.

But turns out this is just the latest weirdness in the world of Rock n Roll artifacts. We'll countdown the weirdest of the weird on next Tuesday's Vinyl Record Talk, broadcast live on Radio Dentata and Blog TV.

Vinyl Record Talk Live Tuesday Jan 31st 8pm PT / 5pm PT on Radio Dentata

We'll be back live on Radio Dentata this Tuesday, and we're also going to have video on BlogTV. So join us for an experimental broadcast as a couple of old farts try and grasp a new and strange world.

But we'll be bringing along the comfort of warm vinyl, with some private press Prog from the bowels of the 1970s, and some sweet soul 45s.

We'll have the Top 5 for the past few weeks, plus Rolling Stones urinals in the news.

Where are Ringo Starr's Tonsils?

John Lennon's tooth sold for over thirty thousand dollars. Here is an article from 1964 about Ringo Starr's tonsillectomy. The hospital refused to answer questions about what was done with Ringo's tonsils. What do you think? Might these be the next Beatle body part to end up on the auction block?

Vinyl Records Top 5 eBay Sales Week Ending 01/21/2012

Probably the second most sought after Stones vinyl collectible (after the pulled "Street Fighting Man" 45 pic sleeve) this UK promotional record that made the #1 spot was sent by Decca to the music press and other VIPs in the UK in 1969. In hindsight its hard to imagine, but after the death of Brian Jones, the future of the Rolling Stones was uncertain in terms of continued popularity, and up until "Exile On Main Street" the financial viability of the band was in question. Decca obviously thought they needed a boost.

Several original Blue Note LPs show up this week, and the return of Northern Soul continues.

1. LP - The Rolling Stones "promotional album" Decca UK Promo 1969 - $5,640.12

2. 45 - Nabay "Believe It Or Not" / "Believe It Or Not instr" Impact 1032 - $3,005.00

3. LP - Lee Morgan "Candy" Blue Note 1590 - $2,111.00

4. LP - Kenny Burrell "self-titled" Blue Note 1543 (Warhol Cover) - $2,025.00

5. 10" - Rose Batiste & San Remo Strings "Hit & Run" / "They're For You?" Acetate - $2,024.00

Vinyl Record Talk is Live on Radio Dentata on Tuesdays at 8pm ET / 5pm PT at http://www.radiodentata.com/. Listen only at the website. Radio Dentata is no longer on Live 365 and streams from sites like Tune In have not yet been updated. The only place to hear Radio Dentata's unique programming is at RadioDentata.com

Vinyl Record Talk Show - Live - Tuesday December 6th 8pm ET / 5pm PT on Radio Dentata

Be sure to go only to Radio Dentata for today's show. The Live365 station is playing only an auto, and that will be going down in a few days.

Jane will pick up where the old server dropped us last week about half-way through the show and continue with her playlist of 60s favorites. Norm has numerous 45s he wants to spin, plus the final tally on bids for John Lennon's To-Do List.

This link will take you directly to the player.

John Lennon's To-Do List

Radio Dentata lost today's live feed of Vinyl Record Talk about half-way through the show, so we never got to today's news. I thought I'd share the to-do list that was the subject of today's news story. This list is on auction at "Gotta Have Rock And Roll" and bidding currently sits at close to $6000.00. John Lennon wrote this list in the 70s (we know this because the list notes that his HBO needs to be fixed).

Notice Lennon is picking up "herb" from some guy named Steve. I was texting Malice Cooper during her show and she speculated that the only thing that got done on this list was the "herb".
Me, I'm not so sure. I think the marmalade probably got picked up too. And the cable guy got let in. But I'll bet that bathroom hook never got fixed.

Vinyl Record Talk Show - Live - Tuesday December 6th 8pm ET / 5pm PT on Radio Dentata

More weird John Lennon stuff shows up at auction in the news. We have acquired a sweet collection of 45s, and we'll be playing some of those including a very funny Lee Eldred record on Chess.

As well, we have a number of obscure LPs from the early 70s and we'll play some tracks from the CSN sounding band Wally, and a band akin to the Moody Blues - Willow.

Malice Cooper Loses It Over John Lennon's Tooth

This is hysterical. Nightmares With Malice Cooper is the show on Radio Dentata before VRT. I was texting Malice during her show for her to announce some upcoming segments on VRT and she completely loses it over John Lennon's tooth being auctioned for $30,000. This is about 15 minutes.

Vinyl Record Talk Show - Live - Today, Tuesday November 22nd 8pm ET / 5pm PT on Radio Dentata

Yup, that's the tooth that went from John Lennon's mouth to his housekeeper's hands to the auction house. It sold for almost $30,000.00 a few weeks ago. Last week, a letter written by Paul McCartney to an unknown drummer inviting him to try out for the Beatles went on the auction block. Does paper beat tooth? Find out on VRT, today at 5pm PT / 8pm ET on Radio Dentata.

Also, be brave, Jane's been digging through the crates and has a very strange 45 she's going to play. That and the Top 5 record auctions plus lots more music on Vinyl Record Talk.

Vinyl Record Talk Show - Live - Today, Tuesday November 8th 8pm ET / 5pm PT on Radio Dentata

Another week live on Radio Dentata, and Jane and I have several rare garage 45's we'll spin on vinyl, and by request a song from the Joe Cuba Sextet.

More in the news on John Lennon's tooth for sale, plus, as always, the Top 5.
