Beatles "Love Me Do" Turns 50 Goes Public Domain In The EU - For A Few Months Anyway

Gratefully, the EU has a much simpler and less mysterious copyright system.  Currently copyrights expire at 50 years, which means as of January 11th, the day of the single's release, The Beatles "Love Me Do" entered the public domain in Europe.  Plans are to adjust the copyright time-stamp upward to 70 years and bring "Love Me Do" and the like back into the protected fold.

This is expected to happen late this year, with the caveat that copyright holders must use or lose their copyrights.  If materials owned by record companies remain unreleased for a period of time, rights would then return to the work's creator.  This has led to a slew of vault releases in Europe, including an 86 track release of Bob Dylan's demos (his first album is already in the public domain).

Much more interesting will be to watch what happens on the internet between now and the end of year.  With the US Customs Department taking it upon themselves to claim the domain names of infringing websites, even those not in the US, I will be watching to see if some European sites pop-up offering for sale downloads of public domain Beatles, Dylan, and one can expect Stones, Yardbirds, Elvis etc. and what the reaction will be by the music industry and US government where copyright extends to . . . . oh who the hell thinks the Micky Mouse copyright laws here will ever allow anything made after Caruso to enter the public domain?

Auction News - The House That Sold John Lennon's Tooth Is Back In 2013 With A New Beatles Auction

Omega auctions in the UK still has space in their March 22, 2013 Beatles auction catalogue.  So if you have any Beatles' body parts, shoelaces or used hankies you have until February 8 to get them to the auction house. Omega was the house that famously sold John Lennon's tooth and supposedly subsequently handled Julian Lennon's baby tooth for DNA verification.   I spent a good bit of time chewing over John Lennon's tooth on this blog last year, including when I sent Malice Cooper into a 15 minute hysterical rant on the subject of celebrity teeth on her radio show.

Omega is the auction house that has made the news this week for uncovering unknown color slides of the Beatles from their first US tour in 1964.  So far the slides are the only announced item for the March auction.  The catalogue will be available for viewing online on March 1st.

Here is a pic of one of the slides being offered.

45 RPM - Katfish - "Dear Prudence" - Just Something A Little Weird

This caught my attention today and I'd never heard it, or even come across a copy.  It's not valuable even if it is rare.  The copyright date is 1975 which was kind of late for something this psychy folky tinged with a bit of 60s teen pop.  Certainly not a great record, but just something a little weird and unknown to me among Beatle covers.

The Ringo Wrecking Ball - Some Debates Got Settled In 2012

The story received little attention in the US, but reached the windy windy halls of Whitehall in the UK.  What to do with the house whenst Ringo was born?

The debate whether to restore or demolish the home, and the fate of the block on which it sits, went on for several years.  In this time it was learned that the brick row block of Madryn St, within number 9 of which the Starkey family lived (that's pronounced Starr in Beatleese), had been bombed by the Nazi's when Ringo (pronounced Richard within his family) was only months old.

Ringo's family lived there only a short time, which lent weight to the argument that since the family didn't want to live in a danky old flat, and got the hell out as soon as they could, the home has little significance - hence get the wrecking ball and some canvas bags, I'm collecting bricks to sell on eBay.

And that seemed to be the direction the debate was going as of late May of last year when the National Trust, the British body responsible for management of historic homes (and there is a large inventory of history on that strange little island) decided the home wasn't worth saving.

But in mid June, the Minister of Housing in the UK, Grant Shapps, stepped in with Liverpool community organizers and announced funds had been gathered to restore the Madyrn St block and other houses in Liverpool to test the market for fully refurbished and upscale re-modelings of such homes, and in the course of this test marketing Ringo's home would be preserved.

For his own part, Ringo Starr himself said nothing during the entire debate, accept to say some unkind things about Liverpool in general, and then write and record a song to make up for it.

History Picking - Top Ten ALL-TIME "Hot 100" Songs

"Billboard Hot 100 50th Anniversary" chart -

 All-time "Hot 100" top songs*

  1. "The Twist"
  2. "Smooth"
  3. "Mack the Knife"
  4. "How Do I Live"
  5. "Macarena" (Bayside Boys Mix)
  6. "Physical"
  7. "You Light Up My Life"
  8. "Hey Jude"
  9. "We Belong Together"
  10. "Un-Break My Heart"

I don't know if I feel worse about the fact that the Macarena is on there.; Oh - please burn the images of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton doing it, out of my mind forever! Or, that The Beatles only appear once, and rank  8th.?! Tragic. If you're curious as to why, or have 5 minutes of mind numbing boredom penciled in for this hour, read the criteria below.

*Criteria used for "Billboard 50th Anniversary" chart position

The songs in the "50th Anniversary" charts had to appear on the Hot 100 in order to be counted. This may create some confusion (for example: many great country artists and songs are not on the "50th Anniversary" chart because, while very popular on the country charts they didn't cross over to the Hot 100). Also, keep in mind the Hot 100 started in August 1958 so any prior songs are not listed, including some popular Elvis Presley songs.
The "50th Anniversary" chart is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100. The artist chart utilizes the same methodology, with weighted points applied to all titles charted by each artist during that 50-year span. They are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at number one earning the greatest value and weeks at number one hundred earning the least.
Hot 100's 50th Anniversary award relative points for every week that a title spent on the chart, regardless of rank. For the Hot 100's 50th Anniversary, Billboard's charts department ensured a more balanced representation of hits from all 50 years, by analyzing the length of chart runs in earlier decades, as well as the average weeks that titles spent in the top 10 and at number one. Weights for earlier spans were then formulated, to compensate for the shorter chart runs that titles experienced before the 1991 conversion to precise and objective sales and radio data from Nielsen Music.
Prior to December 1998, songs did not appear on the Billboard Hot 100 until a retail single became available (which, incidentally, is why hits like Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and No Doubt's "Don't Speak" never appeared on the Hot 100). In earlier years, retail singles came to market fairly early in a song's life-usually shortly after, or even before, a song came to radio.
However, during the 1990s, when labels would strategize number-one chart bows by significant hits, the retail release of some priority singles were withheld until radio audience reached maximum levels. Although some of these songs spent significant numbers of weeks at number one or in the top ten, the delay of the sales component ultimately shortened the spans these songs would spend on the chart. With the new methodology rewarding points for a song's entire chart run, rather than confining points to weeks spent in the top ten, the shorter chart lives recorded by the songs that debuted at number one impact their all-time standings.

History Picking - Runaways From 1964 Go From Ohio To London And From The Beatles To The Rolling Stones

Article From The Milwaukee Journal, Oct 8, 1964.  Two runaways found in London had come to find The Beatles and fell in love with The Rolling Stones.

Ringo Starr Drum Case Discovered - Later Artifact - Not Body Part - Contents Unknown

Ringo Starr's Drum Case - Dig Gallery
The usual word was used here to explain the appearance of the latest Beatle artifact to turn up in the marketplace - "discovery".  This drum case was "discovered" and now sits in a Sheffield UK gallery waiting for a buyer.  Yes, it took an archaeological team six months of digging in the outskirts of Wembly to uncover this drum case.

Expert analysis determined that the case was used to carry the exceptionally rare tom tom drum from London to New York for a tribal event thought to have been called "The Concert For Bangladesh" (it had a shipper date stamp of 8-5-71).

The drum case is being offered by Dig Gallery.  The price is not disclosed, and as with all Dig memorabilia it is available for viewing by appointment only.

Elvis Presley's Mouth Mold Sells For $10,000 and Julian Lennon's baby tooth appears out of nowhere

The King's mouth mold with a crown
Dr. Michael Zuk, a dentist in Alberta, Canada is the proud owner of the Elvis Presley mouth mold (with used crown) that sold at auction late last month.  The doctor's winning bid was $10,000.

Dr. Zuk is also the winner of John Lennon's rotten tooth, for which he bid over $30,000 last November.  He may also be the progenitor of  the term Canadian Dentist as an epithet for someone more than a little eccentric with their money.

The tooth collection has created a stir around his practice with patients and the curious calling to see the teeth.  And after seeing both Elvis' mouth and Lennon's rotten tooth, those patients, and maybe some the curious, might stick around for extra cleaning, or get their kids in early for braces.

The good doctor also has a baby tooth in his possession from Julian Lennon.  This has been reported in other news sources as having come with John Lennon's tooth for purposes of DNA testing, but no mention of Julian's baby tooth was made prior to some public contemplation by journalists, bloggers and forum posters that the tooth could be a fake.  After all, it's provenance begins with John Lennon's maid and then goes to the maid's daughter, with the unusual claim that John Lennon gave his maid the tooth, and in some reports, gave it to her after he pulled it out himself.  Dr. Zuk said publicly last month that he was looking for a relative of John Lennon's to provide a DNA sample for comparison.

Ringo Starr's Madryn Street Birth Home Rejected For Preservation - Lennon And McCartney Homes Granted Protected Status

The battle for 9 Madryn Street had been quiet since late last summer, when a protective order was granted in order to give English Heritage, the public body in the UK that oversees historic homes, the opportunity to consider granting Ringo Starr's birth home (which had been bombed by Nazi's while Ringo's Mom was pregnant), protected status.

It had come down to a battle between the Labor dominated Liverpool City Council, and London's coalition Lib-Con goverment, with the central administration halting city demolition plans.

English Heritage weighed in with their decision today, and while giving protected status to John Lennon and Paul McCartney's birth homes, rejected the application for Ringo's home. Though it could be taken as a slight to Ringo over . . . some unkind comments he made about Liverpool last year . . . or his weird behavior about autographs . . . or, that he's Ringo . . . it should be noted that his family lived in the home only until Ringo was four year-old, and the later home where Ringo spent most of his childhood already has protected status.

No comment yet from anyone on how the drama will move forward, but hey, puts one more story back in our pocket on VRT that few other news outlets, music or otherwise, are following.

Early Davy Jones (1945-2012) - From 3rd single as David Jones "The Girl From Chelsea"

Born David Thomas Jones, he was an actor before he was a pop singer, appearing in BBC soap operas and crime dramas until the age of 14 when his mother passed away. He then took up race horse jockeying until coming back to the stage in Oliver. The cast made an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show the same night as The Beatles first appearance. This single was recorded the following year.

But turns out this is just the latest weirdness in the world of Rock n Roll artifacts. We'll countdown the weirdest of the weird on next Tuesday's Vinyl Record Talk, broadcast live on Radio Dentata and Blog TV.
