45 RPM First - Brian Howard with The Silhouettes "The Worryin' Kind" - First Commercial Single With Jimmy Page On Electric Guitar - Recorded From A Columbia 7067 Vinyl - Released July 1963

It's true the insturmental "Diamonds" by Jet Harris was the first time Jimmy Page received a paycheck for playing in the studio, but he played acoustic rhythm guitar on that song, and yes in Led Zeppelin he did meld acoustic and electric guitar in a way that the world had never before heard, and thus single-handedly ended the 1960s - screw acid and protests, gimmie skunk weed and a muscle car.  But its the electric chops he's known for, and six months after "Diamonds", he played the electric lead you hear on this song.

45 RPM First - David Bowie (as Davie Jones and The King Bees) "Liza Jane" - Recorded From A Vocalion Pop 9221 Vinyl - Released June 5, 1964

Happy 63rd Birthday 45 RPM

History Picking - Happy Birthday 45 RPM - First Ads For 45 RPM Record Players - March 31, 1949 / And How Willie Nelson Started Independent Music

Here is an ad that ran in newspapers all over the United States on this day in 1949.  This on is from The Salt Lake Tribune: March 31, 1949

At the beginning a format war developed that saw RCA and Columbia refusing to release records in each other's formats. See this article from the Cedar Rapids Gazette: July 30, 1949 (article in center top of right page "Stuggle In Speeds")

But the lack of foresight here was in the ease with which 45 RPM records could be manufactured.  What had started as a means to lock down a format that would forever more give one manufacturer dominance over the music market itself, gave musicians and small producers the opportunity to manufacturer and release small runs of records inexpensively.

Eight years later a DJ in Seattle, Washington would press a few hundred 45's of his own music at his own expense and sell them on his radio show.  That DJ was Willie Nelson.  The record wasn't a success, and he sold his next song for $50.00.  "Family Bible" became a hit for Claude Grey two years later.  But that self-will to plop down your own money was an action that would be often repeated, and would feed the dreams of musicians, the career's of record pickers, and start the successes of bands for the rest of the century, including most recently The White Stripes.  And hell, 45 RPM records are still the biggest format released on Record Store Day.

It's cause they're just so damn pretty.

Happy Birthday 45 RPM - They Weren't Ripe Yet - Eddy Arnold "My Texarkana Baby" - 1st Commercial 45 RPM Record Released Today March 31, 1949

The marketing misjudgment that keeps on giving.  More on that in coming posts.

Northern Soul 45 RPM - Jackie Taylor "Walkin' Back"

Down tempo Northern Soul for a rainy day and a damp dance floor.

Rare Girl Garage 45 RPM - The Sanshers "Gonna Git That Man"

As gritty as any four dudes!

March 31, 1958 - Chuck Berry "Johnny B. Goode" Released

#1691 on the Chess label, and has been covered live by more than 100 renown bands, and only because every guitar player in every one of those bands grew up wanting to play like Chuck Berry, and each just wants to show their audience that on a good night, they can play as well as Chuck Berry having a bad night.

The Wit Of Madonna - Several Hand Written Letters And Notes Have Shown Up For Auction

Faxed Letter To Letterman 1994
The letter to the left sold at Julien's Live for $4,800.00 recently.  It was faxed to David Letterman's office after an appearance in April of 1994.  The letter is very to the point about something.  Ok, they had some kind of relationship, if only for panty sniffing purposes.  This would have been after the March appearance in which Madonna asked Letterman to, in fact, sniff her panties.

Gotta Have Rock And Roll has a letter and a to-do list (similar to John Lennon's to-do list that old several months ago) currently up for auction.  The to-do list is not as interesting as Lennon's (no mention of "getting herb from Steve" or whoever it was) and mentions purchasing film and making a counter-offer.

To-Do List
Assistant Letter Page 1
The letter from Gotta Have is to her personal assistant, and from some years before the Letterman incidents.  It shows an overt sentimentality, and seems to get much more toward the real person.  The bidding on this letter is only up to $656.00, and $491.00 for the to-do list.

Assistant Letter Page 2

Carol Williams - "Catch The Sun" 45 RPM

A VRT Vinyl Sharing Moment - The Professionals "That's Why I Love You" - Remastered

This what $2k sounds like, 'cept better here.  There are about five cuts of "That's Why I Love You" on YouTube and they all sound muddy and I believe they were each taken from one of two recordings.  So here's a remaster that integrates the best of both, cleans up the highs and lows, a little modulated in places, but still a pleasant improvement.

History Picking - Denis Hills (Gillian Hills father) Nearly Executed By Idi Amin

Neglected to mention on today's Vinyl Record Talk, in our exploration of French Pop, that Gillian Hills' father was a British lecturer who was ordered executed by Idi Amin for calling him a "village tyrant" while teaching at a Ugandan university.

From The Glasgow Herald - July 11, 1975

From Today's VRT - Original Hit Of Mad Men Rediscovered "Zou Bisou Bisou" performed by Gillian Hills

A hit in France in 1961 and a hit in the UK in 1962 for Gillian Hills, here is the original hit of the song that Mad Men has reintroduced to the world (including through their own vinyl releases).

From Today's VRT - Menage a trois scene from "Blow Up" with Jane Birkin and Gillian Hills

Gillian Hill, who was the first performer to have a hit in 1961 with the Mad Men rediscovered "Zou Bisou Bisou", pulls off Jane Birkin's clothes, and Jane does the same to Gillian, in 1966's "Blow-Up".

From Today's VRT - Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg "Je T'aime"

Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg's biggest world-wide hit, "Je T'aime" from 1969.

From Today's VRT - France Gall "Laisse Tomber Les Filles"

From 1964, this Serge Gainsbourg penned song was reworked by April March in 1995 as "Chick Habit".  It was a hit in France for France Gall.

For Today's VRT - A Clockwork Orange - Gillian Hills "Old In And Out" Scene

Gillian Hills was the first performer to chart with Mad Men's "Zou Bisou Bisou" in 1961 and 1962.  Here she is in 1971's "A Clockwork Orange", in her second ever film menage-a-trois scene.  More on this on today's Vinyl Record Talk, 9pm ET / 6pm PT on Radio Dentata.

For Today's VRT - April March's Chick Habit - Interpreted by Vegas

Today's VRT will focus on French Pop, via "Zou Bisou Bisou".  In 1995, April March created an english version of French pop song "Laisse Tomber Les Filles" re-titled "Chick Habit", the song used most recently in Tarantino's "Death Proof".   Here is a interpretation of April March's "Chick Habit" by the coolest person in the world making YouTube videos out of her apartment - Vegas.

This Week's Vinyl Record Talk Tuesday March 27th, 9pm ET / 6pm PT

Mad Men is back so we turn our focus to 60s pop this week and as we did so many times 18 months ago dig a little deeper into the music of Mad Men.

The sexy musical highlight of last Sunday's premiere "Zou Bisou Bisou" has connections to Sophia Loren, and the films The Millionairess and A Clockwork Orange.  We'll also play other sexy 60s French pop songs.

Who the Osbournes think about while having sex is in the news, plus the Top 5.

Jerry Garcia Update - Bonhams Catalog Now On Their Website

I lived through the red t-shirt era.  It wasn't fun.  At Long Beach in '85 some girl about seventeen thought I was looking at her the wrong way and stuck a pen knife at my side, said she had just shot heroin and was going to open up my intestine.  Packed in and some people mooing like cattle moving at a slow pace to the arena's doors, that was the first moment I had noticed this girl, dirty blonde, horrible acne but her teeth were ok; a tweaker I would have been worried about.  I just took her pen knife and moved out of the crowd.  Point is this shit wasn't supposed to happen at a Grateful Dead concert.  The Scorpions concert I had been to a few weeks earlier had had a friendlier vibe.  I threw the knife away.  Then noticed that by whipping the knife out of her hand by the blade, I had nicked a small rip in one of my favorite Dead shirts.

Which brings me to Bonhams auction that I reported on several days ago.  The catalog of the upcoming Visions Of Garcia auction is now up on Bonham's website.  More or less, it's like Jerry was having a garage sale.  Yes the Harley is cool, but that's almost it.  Most of the rest are prototype products, artwork that was used on the dreaded ties, a few minor pieces of equipment - I mean its exactly what one would expect to have found in Jerry Garcia's garage.

One interesting piece is the red t-shirt.  The red t-shirt era ran from sometime in 1984 until Garcia's coma in the summer of 1986 - upon his return in December of 1986 Jerry wore a black t-shirt.  These weren't good years for the Dead.  Jerry left the stage part way through sets.  When he was on stage he never moved.  I heard a story that during the "Satisfaction" encore at the last show before his coma he did an imitation of a Bob Weir leap at the microphone, the first time anyone has seen him move on stage since '82.  In the New Year's broadcast video from 1985 (which at the time had been shown live on cable), Jerry can be seen drooling, yes drooling, into the microphone.

The hole is the most interesting part of the red t-shirt on auction at Bonhams.  That hole tells a story.  I do not need to invent or embellish.  If you were there during this time, it's not an effort to read the story that hole tells.

Jerry Garcia did get some more good years.  And as he did everything possible to do things as differently as possible from the rock world idioms of his time, he was one rock star who did manage to go out with a whimper, and not a bang.

March 25, 1964 & 1958 - Beatles First On TOTP / Elvis Gets A Haircut

The Beatles made their first appearance on Top Of The Pops today in 1964, performing "Can't Buy Me Love", their fourth #1 single in the UK.  TOTP tapes from that era have been lost.  Below is a Ready Steady Go video from a performance of the same song on March 20 of that year.

On the same day in 1958 Elvis was into his first full day in the Army, receiving his first Army haircut.  Two years later on this day he performed his last concert for eight years in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

History Picking - London Theater Torn Apart At Chuck Berry Concert, Two Beatles In Attendance, February 20, 1967

Two articles for this find - the first is from St Petersburg, Florida and describes the riot at the Brian Epstein owned Saville Theatre in detail.

The second article comes from the Glasgow Herald the following day and tells the story of how Epstein fired the guy who brought down the curtain and aggravated the audience.

Lucifer Rising Complete Film - From Today's VRT

As promised on today's show this is the Lucifer Rising film, complete with original Bobby Beausoleil soundtrack.  I found it hiding on Google video.  Jimmy Page began work on the soundtrack in 1970 and never completed it.  This week he released a revisited version of the soundtrack only on vinyl.

This Week's Vinyl Record Talk Tuesday March 20th, 9pm ET / 6pm PT

Lots to do this week on VRT.  We are hoping Radio Dentata will be up on RadioFlag by show time, a new social media service for those who love radio, a kind of cross between Twitter and Tunein.

It'll be a mostly vinyl show with 45's from Dyke and the Blazers, Bobby Day and others.  Plus we'll go over some of the music related items showing up on auction around the world.

In the news we'll have a numerology lesson in honor of Jimmy Page's new vinyl only release, and as always count down and discuss the Top 5 record sales on eBay for the last week.

Please join us for this weeks VRT live on Radio Dentata and Blog TV.

Vintage Rock Posters owner Andrew Hawley who has previously announced public searches for Buddy Holly and Doors posters, has announced his search for a specific single poster.

This poster comes from a one night Led Zeppelin concert in Seattle at the Seattle Coliseum in 1970.  This was the third time Zeppelin had performed in Seattle.  In their previous visit they shared a bill with The Doors.

Hawley is offering $3000.00 for the poster.  If you've got the poster you can contact Andrew Hawley at andrew(at)vintageconcertposterbuyer(dot)com.

Jerry Garcia Harley Davidson And Other Dead Stuff Coming Up For Auction

Jerry Garcia's 1983 Harley, several guitars, sunglasses, sketch books, art and other items, including a set of Bill Kreutzmann's drums, go on auction at Bonhams in San Francisco on May 8th.

No strange personal artifacts or body parts in this one, but it is rare that so many Jerry Garcia items show up for auction at once.

An illustrated catalog will be available a few weeks before the auction and we'll be sure to post that here.

A VRT Vinyl Sharing Moment - The Factory "A Path Through The Forest"

An old favorite of Vinyl Record Talk, which we've played many times on the show, this is a sought after psych freakbeat gem, recorded from vinyl.

Check Out RadioFlag - Twitter Meets TuneIn

I love RadioFlag even though I'm too damn old to grasp it easily.  So somebody else use this and tell me how the damn thing works.  Mostly an effort by various college radio stations (but hey, that's similar to how Facebook started), this is something like a cross between Twitter and TuneIn.

As one of the few old farts playing around with this (Jeff Beeching of Kitschen Sink Radio being the older fart), I've been adding the AM oldies stations that I've kept track of going around buying record collections.  So if you can stand the smell of teen spirit, get in there and add some content, internet stations, local stations, Armageddon loving stations . . . a loop of your dog barking.

A Nagging Vinyl Record Question Is Answered By Art

I have a very simple mind.  None of the complex questions nag at my mind for very long.  For me, thoughts about string theory stop at "how come that line of mucus and saliva is so strong that it so rigidly hangs there after you spit your toothpaste - you can't shake it off, you either have to hunch until gravity pulls it down all the way, or wipe with your finger."

See, simple mind.

So when I came across the brochure for the Miami Art Museum's exhibit "The Record: Contemporary Art And Vinyl" (pdf), I first thought, "Did I brush my teeth this morning?" After dealing with a more difficult application of string theory, I sat back down at my monitor and read the brochure, and there in all it's glory was an answer to a question that had been nagging me since I started buying large loads of records.

That question has always been that in the character of any large load of records there are pristine specimens, and then there is the vast sea of ones about which I ask, "When the hell did these records get trashed so badly".

And there, in the brochure, in a photograph titled "Je Suis Fan des Disques, 3 Nov. 1973 (I Am Crazy for Records)" was an answer, of sorts, or a least a time stamp.  A larger and cleaner version of the above photo appears in the brochure.  The picture dates from a series of portraits shot in Mali in 1973.  In this one particular photograph, 45 rpm records hang on a coat rack.  The records are beat to hell, as bad as some in a load I bought last week.  So if records got that way in their own time of circa 1973, what happens to them for the next forty years until they end up in my warehouse?  Answering one question brings on another question . . .

A Northern Classic - Frank Wilson "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)"

One of the three before eight.

Check Out Psychedelic Jukebox

So simple and old school they didn't have a graphic I could pull down.  It looks like the site was made in 1999, but the music digs deep into 60s psychedelia.  Imagine the Nuggets collections meets crack cocaine.

Asking For Jim Morrison's Bail Money

Morrison's Bail Bond 1970
Gotta Have Rock And Roll, one of the auction houses that will deal in some of the stranger memorabilia (though they haven't gotten into bodies parts yet), is offering this interesting piece of ephemera.

To the left is Jim Morrison's bail bond, from the concert incident in Miami, where by various accounts, the lead singer of the Doors either exposed his penis or simply unzipped his jeans and stuck the microphone through.  Either way, he was arrested for indecent exposure.

Interestingly, Gotta Have Rock And Roll's opening bid is the exact amount of Morrison's bail - $40,000.  However in today's dollars the bail amount would have been $250k.

Ringo Starr Drum Case Discovered - Later Artifact - Not Body Part - Contents Unknown

Ringo Starr's Drum Case - Dig Gallery
The usual word was used here to explain the appearance of the latest Beatle artifact to turn up in the marketplace - "discovery".  This drum case was "discovered" and now sits in a Sheffield UK gallery waiting for a buyer.  Yes, it took an archaeological team six months of digging in the outskirts of Wembly to uncover this drum case.

Expert analysis determined that the case was used to carry the exceptionally rare tom tom drum from London to New York for a tribal event thought to have been called "The Concert For Bangladesh" (it had a shipper date stamp of 8-5-71).

The drum case is being offered by Dig Gallery.  The price is not disclosed, and as with all Dig memorabilia it is available for viewing by appointment only.

Not The Worlds Smallest Record Player

My friend, and the first guest on Vinyl Record Talk, Lisa Sumner, liked this video on You Tube.  I have seen smaller though.  I know of a smaller record player, no more than the width of the cartridge except for the spindle.  It only plays 45's, and is about as long as pair of pliers.  A picture will be forthcoming . . .

Gene Simmons To Open "Rock And Brew" Restaurant Chain

Come on, smell my finger, I did
So the only man alive to make our Top 10 Creepiest Rock n Roll Artifacts Bought and Sold list with a blood soaked towel (wait a minute - doesn't he use fake blood on stage?) is set to open a theme of chained restaurants.

The decor theme of the restaurant will be Rock n Roll art and posters with large screens playing live music.  The food will be based on rock icon favorite recipes.

This being the case I might make a joke here about Ozzy and pigeon stew, but . . . nah.  However I'm not sure exactly why musicians would be a choice for recommending recipes,  many I've know eat their own boogers.  But I know being on the road makes one crave a diversion, so perhaps some interesting concoctions will turn up on the menu.

Elvis Presley's Mouth Mold Sells For $10,000 and Julian Lennon's baby tooth appears out of nowhere

The King's mouth mold with a crown
Dr. Michael Zuk, a dentist in Alberta, Canada is the proud owner of the Elvis Presley mouth mold (with used crown) that sold at auction late last month.  The doctor's winning bid was $10,000.

Dr. Zuk is also the winner of John Lennon's rotten tooth, for which he bid over $30,000 last November.  He may also be the progenitor of  the term Canadian Dentist as an epithet for someone more than a little eccentric with their money.

The tooth collection has created a stir around his practice with patients and the curious calling to see the teeth.  And after seeing both Elvis' mouth and Lennon's rotten tooth, those patients, and maybe some the curious, might stick around for extra cleaning, or get their kids in early for braces.

The good doctor also has a baby tooth in his possession from Julian Lennon.  This has been reported in other news sources as having come with John Lennon's tooth for purposes of DNA testing, but no mention of Julian's baby tooth was made prior to some public contemplation by journalists, bloggers and forum posters that the tooth could be a fake.  After all, it's provenance begins with John Lennon's maid and then goes to the maid's daughter, with the unusual claim that John Lennon gave his maid the tooth, and in some reports, gave it to her after he pulled it out himself.  Dr. Zuk said publicly last month that he was looking for a relative of John Lennon's to provide a DNA sample for comparison.

Musicstack Price Guide - Oh My God The SOB F-ing Did It!!

Ok, so I'm five months late, but if I didn't notice it until now, maybe you didn't either. This is the most useful thing to hit record collecting on the Internet since Popsike, probably more useful than Popsike.

David Stack, founder of Musicstack, has made sales data from his website into a searchable database - or more simply stated - A Price Guide.  In case you've been in a cave, Musicstack is the second most popular music buying/selling marketplace after eBay (to collectible vinyl sellers Amazon doesn't exist, because we don't exist to them, more or less).

Don't undervalue what David Stack has done.  Popsike only lists records that sold for $20.00 or more.  The Musicstack Price Guide is a database of every sale on that site going back to 2006; if it sold for $3 or $3,000 its there.  A search of an Artist / Title brings up full detail on Grade / Price / Date Sold.  This is a very important development in pricing.  Essentially, The Musicstack Price Guide, along with Popsike and the various ways to get sales data from eBay, makes Goldmine irrelevant as anything but an idiot detector.  I would no longer have an esophagus if I let myself throw-up every time someone quoted the Goldmine Price Guide as the reason they were asking for their price, as in, "I'm selling my record collection at a bargain discount - 25% below Goldmine Price Guide - all 2000 records in my collection, will sell only as one lot, but think of all the money you can make with this discount!"

Play with the Musicstack Price Guide.

Vinyl Records Top 5 eBay Sales Week Ending 03/03/2012

Numbered editions make the list twice this week.  A low numbered white album topped the list, getting more than $1k over a #0000056 that sold in 2009.  A Nirvana "Love Buzz" single makes the list, this time going over the $2-$2.5k selling range that is very tight for this record.  It's a "red slash" single which means there is a red marker slash over where the number (1 to 1000) was normally hand written on the sleeve.  There are 30 of these "red slash" singles known to exist, and these unnumbered copies were given out a promos.

1. LP - The Beatles "White Album" Apple Mono UK Pressing #0000020 - $4,602.30

2. LP - Donald Byrd "Byrd Blows On Beacon Hill" Transition 17 - $2,926.54

3. 45 - Nirvana "Love Buzz" Sub Pop Red Slash Promo - $2,800.00

4. 45 - The Limelights "Don't Leave Me Baby" / "You Don't Love Me Anymore" Uncle 1442 - $2,600.00

5. LP - John Heartsman and Circles "Music Of My Heart" Private Press - $2,402.77
